MG IM6 Review: The MG IM6 might wear an MG badge in the UK, but beneath the surface it is no MG at all. Instead, it is an IM—a Chinese EV brand under MG’s parent company SAIC. To strengthen its global presence, IM has partnered with MG to sell its EVs in Europe. The result: the IM6 SUV and IM5 saloon, positioned above MG’s existing lineup but just below the halo Cyberster sports car.

The IM6 is aimed squarely at business buyers, hoping to lure them with low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax rates on electric cars, which remain in single digits until 2030. MG has made minor tweaks to suspension and steering for European markets and added a new infotainment system, but beyond that, the car remains largely unchanged from its Chinese counterpart. Curiously, it carries just one MG badge across its 4.9-metre body.

Versions and Range

There are two versions of the IM6, both powered by a 100kWh battery pack:

  • Long Range (RWD) – Delivers 388 miles of claimed range, powered by 402bhp and 369lb ft torque. Top speed: 146mph.
  • Performance (AWD) – Adds a second motor, cutting range to 313 miles but boosting output to a staggering 742bhp and 591lb ft. This allows a 0–62mph sprint in just 3.5 seconds, putting it in league with performance sports cars.
  • A Launch Edition adds active damping and air suspension for improved comfort.

Performance & Ride Quality

While the numbers are jaw-dropping, the ride quality leaves much to be desired. Even with air suspension, the car feels unsettled, transmitting potholes and surface imperfections harshly into the cabin. The steering lacks feedback, and the overall driving experience feels bland—disappointing for a car capable of keeping pace with a Porsche 911 GT3.

The Performance model, with its brutal acceleration, feels almost too fast for an SUV designed for corporate commutes, raising questions about practicality and safety.

Interior & Features

The interior is spacious, with ample tech and digital features. However, the design is underwhelming and dominated by a large touchscreen interface that demands too much attention from the driver. Testers drove a late-stage pre-production unit, leaving room for potential refinements before the market launch in September 2025.

MG IM6 Price & Rivals

The IM6 Long Range starts at £47,995, while the Launch Edition tops out at around £53,000. This positions it above mainstream rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Skoda Enyaq, while being closer in size to premium models like the BMW iX, Mercedes EQE SUV, and Audi Q8 e-tron.

On paper, the IM6 offers large SUV space for mid-size money. However, buyers expecting premium German quality and refinement may be disappointed.

Verdict

The MG IM6 is an ambitious EV with massive range, lightning performance, and plenty of space. But poor ride comfort, bland driving dynamics, and a dull cabin hold it back from being a genuine premium contender.

While MG’s strategy of rebadging IM cars may help expand its portfolio, the IM6 doesn’t feel Europe-ready yet. For business buyers chasing tax savings and big-battery practicality, it may be tempting. But for enthusiasts or those seeking refinement, the IM6 remains a tough sell.
