Triumph Thruxton 400: Triumph has officially launched the Thruxton 400 in India at an ex-showroom price of ₹2.74 lakh, making it the fifth motorcycle to emerge from the brand’s successful collaboration with Bajaj Auto. While it shares its foundation with the popular Speed 400, the Thruxton 400 breaks away with classic café racer styling, a revised riding posture, and a mild performance boost.

Classic Café Racer Aesthetics with Modern Elements

Carrying forward the legendary Thruxton name, the 400cc variant is designed to pay homage to traditional café racers. It gets a half bikini fairing, clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, and a remote brake fluid reservoir—all adding to its aggressive, retro-inspired stance.

Notable differences from the Speed 400 include:

  • A black USD front fork instead of gold,
  • Redesigned side panels with brushed aluminium touches,
  • A rectangular tail-lamp replacing the Speed’s circular unit,
  • A single-seat setup with a removable rear cowl that reveals a pillion seat and a black grab rail.

The fuel tank design has been subtly refreshed, featuring a revised Triumph logo inset, though the capacity remains unchanged at 13 litres.

Engine and Performance: More Power, Sharper Character

Under the tank, the Thruxton 400 continues to use the 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine found on the Speed 400, but it’s been tuned for a sportier feel. It now produces:

  • 42hp (up by 2hp),
  • Peak power at 9,000rpm (1,000rpm higher than Speed 400),
  • 37.5Nm of torque,
  • Paired with a 6-speed gearbox and slipper clutch.

Though the core chassis and braking setup are shared with the Speed 400, Triumph has made subtle changes:

  • Suspension travel increased to 140mm (+10mm),
  • Shorter wheelbase at 1,376mm (-10mm),
  • Reduced ground clearance at 158mm (-7mm),
  • Seat height increased to 795mm,
  • Kerb weight is now 183kg (+4kg).

Tyres will either be MRF or Apollo, depending on availability, and Triumph assures consistent performance with both options.

Feature-wise, the Thruxton 400 mirrors the Speed 400 and includes:

  • A digi-analogue instrument cluster with a vertical rev counter and gear position indicator,
  • Dual-channel ABS,
  • Traction control system.

Colour Options and Market Positioning

The Thruxton 400 is offered in four colour variants: red, yellow, black, and white — each featuring a distinctive diagonal contrast stripe across the body.

At ₹2.74 lakh, the Thruxton 400:

  • Costs ₹24,000 more than the Speed 400,
  • Sits below the Scrambler 400 X in Triumph’s 400cc portfolio,
  • Faces no direct rival in the café racer segment at this price point.

The closest alternative is the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, which carries a higher price tag of ₹3.26 lakh to ₹3.52 lakh and features a parallel-twin engine with a completely different performance profile.
